Jaguar Land Rover Recalls 250K-Plus SUVs Due to Potential Airbag Failure

Jaguar Land Rover North America announced plans to recall over 250,000 Land Rover Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender models from the past six model years due to a problem that could prevent the driver’s airbag from deploying.

The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a filing that the connector to the driver’s airbag at the clockspring may corrode, creating resistance in the circuit causing the airbag to fail to deploy.

The 2020 – 2026 Land Rover Defender, 2021-2026 Discovery, and 2022-2026 Range Rover are covered by the safety action. Affected vehicles may feature an illuminated airbag warning lamp that for 300 to 400 miles before the airbag will no longer deploy.

According to the filing, there have been no crashes, injuries, or fatalities due to the problem. However, there was a significant increase in the warranty claims related to the illuminated airbag warning light. Upon further examination by the automaker, it determined the problem was the corrosion at the clopckspring.

Affected owners will receive a notice to bring their vehicles to the nearest Land Rover dealership for the repair, which involves applying protective lubricant gel to the airbag’s connector terminals at no charge to the owner.
