Junkyard Find: 1976 Chevrolet Chevy Van

Genuine mid-1970s-style custom vans still show up in the car graveyards, a good half-century after they reached their cultural zenith, but it's tough to find one that has remained largely intact. Here's a Chevy Van at a Denver junkyard that's an honest time capsule, down to its authentic purple shag carpeting.

This once-righteous custom Chevy got parked at some point in the late 1980s and didn't move again until it was towed into the recycling ecosystem this year.

What makes a proper custom van? It should be a 1960-1982 Detroit van, preferably a cargo version, ideally with aftermarket bubble windows, vivid graphics… and the lingering scent of Acapulco Gold hovering like a disreputable ghost. I've found some good ones in junkyards over the years, with the "Mid Night Cruzer" 1976 Dodge Tradesman at the lower right of this photo reigning as my all-time favorite.

I bought the side mirrors and their aftermarket fiberglass covers from the Mid Night Cruzer and sold them on eBay recently for more than 500 bucks. Malaise Era van culture never died.

Today's Junkyard Find is a mild custom by the standards of the vansploitation universe, but the deep-pile purple shag carpeting is the real deal. Because High Plains Colorado is so dry, this carpeting just smells like dust now (though I was very careful not to stir up hantavirus particles while shooting these photos; Colorado is second only to nearby New Mexico for hantavirus cases).

There are blue patches, but I say this qualifies as purple shag. Remember this style of no-brand-name Taiwanese 6-inch by 9-inch speaker?

There was no factory sunroof available on the 1976 Chevy Van, so this is an aftermarket rig.

I prefer the bubble windows shaped like pot leaves, aces of spades or Playboy bunnies, but the customizer of this van wanted to retain a few shreds of squarejohn respectability.

You could buy some fine bubble windows out of the J.C. Whitney catalog during the middle 1970s.

The build tag tells us this van was built at Lordstown Assembly in November 1975. It's a half-ton model with the optional 350 four-barrel small-block V8.

GM used variations of the Chevy Van name going back to the first forward-control G-Series cargo vans in 1964. These were given Chevy-Van badges (the dash was dropped during the early 1970s), while the early GMC version was called the Handi-Van.

By the middle 1970s, The General settled on standardized naming conventions for GM G-Series vans, which stuck until the end came in 1996. Chevrolet cargo vans were Chevy Vans, while Chevrolet passenger vans were Sportvans. On the GMC side, there were Vandura cargo vans and Rally passenger vans. Ford and Chrysler had similar systems, though they persisted in marketing their passenger vans as station wagons until fairly late in the game.

These GM Service Parts Identification labels are wonderful things for the junkyard automotive historian. The original buyer of this van sprang for some pricey options on top of the $3,811 MSRP ($22,890 today).

The three-speed automatic cost $300, or about $1,802 after inflation. The base transmission was a three-on-the-tree manual.

The air conditioning was a $571 option. That's about $3,430 in 2026 dollars.

There was so much fuel theft by rogue siphoners during the era bookended by the 1973 OPEC embargo and the 1980s oil glut that the locking gas cap became a very common accessory.

If original, this Quadrajet-and-HEI-equipped 350 was rated at 160 horsepower and 255 pound-feet. Overall fuel economy was rated at 13 mpg.

The base engine in the half-ton GM G-Series vans for 1976 was the 250-cubic-inch straight-six. 305- and 400-cube small-blocks were available in addition to the 350. If you moved up to a 3/4- or one-ton G-van, you could get the big 292ci straight-six. No big-block V8s were available in these vans for the 1976 model year.

I thought this badge was from a van-customizing shop, but it came from Van Chevrolet (which sold vehicles in the Dallas area when this van was new). Van Chevrolet is still in effect in Kansas City and Phoenix.

The old road maps indicate travel between the Mississippi and the Rockies.

Remember these "may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits" fake parking tickets? There were many variations during the 1970s and 1980s. In our current era of short attention spans and low reading comprehension, this concept has been simplified.

The tags expired in April 1989. This Colorado license plate style was used for the 1982-1992 period; the GNE code indicates registration in Jefferson County, which is adjacent to Denver and includes the home of Coors.

The rust is the sort you get with a vehicle that gets parked for decades where the rocker panels get buried in snow every winter and water leaks in through the sunroof and decaying weatherstripping.
