Question of the Day: Are the Machines Taking Over?

A newly released study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety claims autonomous vehicles are better drivers than humans. Can it be true?

The IIHS study relies on data from Waymo that shows that in the four markets where their driverless Jaguars are providing rides, it gets in 68% fewer accidents than humans. Waymo operates in the Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas.

However, there are a few things to think about, starting with the sample size of the data: 50 million miles driven by Waymo vehicles compared with 222 billion miles by people. Also, we lack real apples-to-apples data for comparison. The IIHS folks had to “clean up” the information to create a workable dataset. 

But it’s clear that the machines are getting better. Are you ready to give up driving and turn it over to the robots or are you still on Will Smith’s side in iRobot and prefer to take the wheel yourself. Let us know.
