Question of the Day: Polestar Won’t Fight U.S. Ban — Does Anyone Care?

It’s official: Polestar isn’t even going to try to fight for its right to par … er, sell EVs in the U.S. 

Despite scores of dealers encouraging the former Volvo offshoot to fight to stay, Polestar officials confirmed they’re going to take their EVs to Europe, China, and other markets. And despite Volvo, which is owned by the same Chinese investor, begin allowed to stay.

"We will instead focus our investments on markets where we have a strong brand position and ability to achieve profitable growth, with a strong weighting towards Europe," Polestar spokesman Michael Ofiara  told the  Wall Street Journal.

Ofiara told the WSJ that it engaged in “significant dialogue” with U.S. officials, but when push came to shove, it wasn’t going to make a difference. An important point: The 32 Polestar dealers in the U.S. aren’t so ready to tuck tail. 

“We deserve some answers,” Matthew Haiken, one of the biggest of Polestar’s U.S. dealers, told the Journal. Hailen reportedly invested “millions” in his Polestar dealership just outside New York City in East Hanover, New Jersey. The dealership isn’t complete because he paused construction just after the initial warning. 

We sense more lawyers are coming, and that leads us to our two questions for today: Will Polestar actually get banned? Does anyone care?
