Mercedes-Benz Updates C-Class for 2027

Mercedes-Benz revealed the refreshed 2027 C-Class Sedan. While the powertrain has been given some attention, changes are largely visual — tweaking the exterior to more closely match the S-Class and newly electrified variant of the C-Class.

This includes the updated headlights, taillights and grille that make sure the illuminated Mercedes logo is featured in as many places as possible. There are even LEDs on the side mirrors that project the emblem onto the pavement next to wherever the vehicle has been parked when you open the doors.

Mercedes-Benz seems extremely concerned that people might not be able to identify its products of late. But many automakers have been experimenting with conspicuous exterior and interior lighting as a sign of luxury, with Mercedes at the forefront of the trend. While it doesn’t realistically add much to the ownership experience, and may present future challenges should those items ever need repairs, the point is to overtly display to onlookers that this is a Mercedes-Benz and you’re the one that’s behind the wheel.

Opinions on whether or not this has been accomplished in good taste is another matter. But those that think this crosses the line should be relieved to learn that some of the lighting can be customized. That said, you’ll still have an illuminated grille that’s covered in tiny Mercedes logos (along with the large center emblem) and branded daytime runners.

Exterior differences between the gasoline model and electrified C-Class that debuted earlier this year are few in number. But they do add up to give each vehicle a distinctive look. For example, the EV features distinctive heckblende taillights that include roundels that encompass smaller LED emblems. There’s also a gap between the headlights and grille on the electric model, whereas the gasoline-powered C-Class has them touching.

The automaker has added some fresh wheel designs, with the AMG likewise getting a couple of novel options that are an inch larger than standard. Exterior updates are rounded out by two fresh paint options — Miami Silver Metallic (silver) and Moody Sky Grey Metallic.

Interior changes appear to be minimal. The automaker has stated that the steering wheel has been redesigned to include a physical scroll to make volume controls easier. Mercedes will also be offering an AMG Line Plus package that adds red seatbelts and contrast stitching to the upholstery. We imagine this will be tied to specific interior options and may not overlap with the new Beech Brown and Cherry Red upholstery colors. The same is likely true for the novel High-Gloss Silver Metallic or Natural Grain Birch Wood trim options.

All other alterations taking place within the cabin pertain to the vehicle’s updated operating system.

The new Mercedes-Benz Operating System [MB.OS supercomputer with AI] manages all domains of the vehicle and enables over-the-air updates for the entire vehicle software, keeping the new C‑Class up to date and refreshed.

The latest generation MBUX introduces the AI-based MBUX Virtual Assistant to the C‑Class. The intelligent assistant can engage in complex conversations and has short-term memory, responding like a well-informed friend. In the C‑Class, customers receive comprehensive and relevant answers to everyday questions.

Intelligent navigation based on Google technology, together with MBUX Surround Navigation, provides clear route guidance even in complex traffic situations. Thanks to Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, the MBUX Virtual Assistant is highly knowledgeable and can provide personalized answers to questions about points of interest.

Depending upon who you are, the above will either be the coolest or more obnoxious aspect of the new C-Class. We’ve griped about the concept of ownership and the perils of “software-defined” vehicles for years. But understand that plenty of luxury buyers want the latest connected technology fitted to their vehicle, regardless of what it entails.

Virtual assistants and voice commands have earned a shoddy reputation over the years. But there has been improvement and Mercedes has done significantly better than most, even if that hasn’t kept the system from occasionally misunderstanding commands or taking a nap whenever connectivity issues came into play. Considering that none of these systems ever seem to work quite as well as one would expect, here’s hoping the latest version makes further improvements for the people who actually use virtual assistants.

In terms of performance, Mercedes-Benz alleged that the new C-Class would be decidedly more agile thanks to having “specifically optimized the suspension for greater dynamic handling while maintaining a high level of long-distance comfort.” From the sound of things, it looks like the company has made things a tad stiffer by adjusting the dampers.

Models slated for North America will likewise receive an updated version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a 48-volt hybrid system. The integrated starter-generator is supposed to help make auto stop-start border on being imperceptible to the driver while likewise helping to boost performance at lower engine speeds with “up to” 23 horsepower and 151 lb-ft torque.

A newly developed electric auxiliary compressor also assists by helping to support the turbocharger before it can build boost. However, this doesn’t appear to have changed peak output on the C-Class. The M 254 EVO continues to offer the same 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque as its predecessor — albeit with a new overboost function that temporarily allows for an extra 27 hp.

Still, being able to make power earlier is just as important as making more power higher in the rev range and arguably comes with more real-world advantages. We’ll just have to see how it all shakes down after some public testing has been done.

Additional details about the vehicle will be released closer to its North American launch, which is presently scheduled for the first half of 2027. We imagine this will include information on AMG models and how we won’t be getting the wagon variant popular with Europeans. This will also be when Mercedes-Benz confirms the new C-Class’ MSRP, which we doubt will start below $52,000.
